Note about MATH:  Strategies and Materials are included for building conceptual understanding and Mathematical Thinking for the Math standards.  Teachers use these Activities to build the underlying Math concepts and thinking skills for students. They must be able to think and process what is needed to solve problems in real-life situations with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, positive and negative numbers, etc.

Note about ELA:  Materials are included for the READING  standards - - Literary and Informational; the two VOCABULARY  Language standards; and the two most frequently-tested WRITING  standards. Most districts have their own or state-mandated Reading Foundations, Writing Mechanics, and Language Mechanics programs.

We add new tips regularly.  Most are useful in any grade-level or subject, but some are designated to a subject and grade level.  

Standards-based Activities (select from Activity categories below)  -- In many cases, teachers have requested teaching ideas for specific classroom skills.  They know that the material they are using is labeled with a standard but does not actually match its content or cognitive demand. We have developed - - and continue to develop - - one to three-day activities that address a specific standard or a cluster of related standards to match both their content and the cognitive demand. These Activities include the following:

▪The Subject, Grade-Level, and Standard(s) addressed [although these are Ohio standards, they generalize to state standards throughout the United States]
▪The Title of the activity
▪A Synopsis of the activity
▪Enabling skills needed for the Activity and/or Pre-Test items to determine student entry-level.
▪Direct Instruction-suggested teaching ideas aligned to the standards, including sample problems and passages, templates, prompts, and strategies to check for understanding. 
▪Assessments that match the standards and are structured to look like the OST released items. 

A special feature of the ELA K-5 Activities is that they include student-size handouts. This will save the teacher having to increase the size of fonts and templates to make them large enough for younger students to use.  As needed, selected intermediate and 6-8 materials are also “student-sized.” 

These Activities are not intended to replace your existing curriculum or your adopted texts. Our experience and research have shown that most “adopted” curriculum activities and materials don’t  focus tightly enough on the thinking required to master the state content standards. - - And thus, as hard as teachers work, high-stakes test results are still disappointing.  These EdFOCUS ACTIVITIES ARE indeed needed for mastering the state content standards - - which is the key to passing high-stakes tests.
