Product Description
This teaching module is developed to assist in the teaching of ELA at the level of 3rd grade for Ohio Standards of W3.1, W3.2 and W3.3.
Title: Opinion, Information, Narrative-Writing
Ideal for Teachers.
SPECIFICATIONS
This activity combines Opinion Writing(or Persuasive); Information Writing(or Explanatory); and Narrative Writing.
*Opinion writing: give an opinion and provide at least one reason to support it .
*Information (or Expository) writing: present a topic and include ideas and information to describe or explain it.
*Narrative writing: tell a story using the same elements as found in fiction (characters; setting details; a plot)
The teacher provides formats and models, and students practice writing all three types. Actually, most high-stakes tests include Opinion and Information writing, and very few include the Narrative. But many students enjoy writing the Narrative more than the other two. For all three types of writing, students “pre-write” to plan their responses - - usually just a simple list of bullet points to capture the content.
For writing mechanics, the standard sets forth some, but the teacher may identify additional language standards - - a few at first, but gradually adding more by the end of the year to include the complete grade-level list. Students use a simple writing rubric(consisting of the content and language mechanics requirements) to plan their work and to review the quality of the finished piece.
(W 3.4) As they exchange papers with writing partners, students examine drafts using the rubric and provide others with helpful feedback to improve the quality of their own and others’ work ( W 3.5).
