Activity Description
Title: Fiction - - Compare-Contrast Two Literary Details In the Same Text
This ACTIVITY has a set of teaching-learning strategies proven to increase student mastery of this critical Literary standard - - comparing two different characters, setting details, and plot events in the same text. By Grade 5, grade-level texts (e.g., in Harry Potter ) and age-appropriate classical texts (e.g., Treasure Island or a story by Edgar Allan Poe) are more complex than Basal stories - - which have controlled vocabulary and singular plot lines. This activity provides sample FICTION texts to provide students practice with this deeper-level dual-pronged analysis and how two of the same Literary elements impact the plot. Such analysis is also a great foundation for writing and the basis for Quick-Writes (W 5.4 ) and Literary Research-writing (W 5.8 and W 5.9). [At Grades K-5, each Activity attaches student-sized texts, templates, and test items that teachers can quickly print and use immediately in class.]
Enabling Skills: (1) identify Literary elements in a FICTION text; (2) identify multiple characters, setting details, plot events, and the author’s message(s) in a familiar folktale or fable; and (3) explain how Literary [FICTION] elements impact the progression of the story.
Direct Instruction: Suggested teaching strategies are given that model for students what they need to do to begin their journey toward mastery. Students identify Literary elements; then compare two of each - - characters, setting details, plot events, and the author’s message(s) - - in terms of how they move the story forward. Sample texts are provided for students to practice, constructing their own meaning about relationships and influence.
Quick-Writes: Standards-based writing prompts are provided that require students to document that they have internalized the core ideas of the standard(s) and can show independent mastery. In this Activity, the Quick-Writes ask students to put their analysis of “twos” - - and their impact on the flow of the text - - into writing.
High-Stakes Look-Alike Assessments: At Grades 3-8, the Activities include two tests - - one for practice - - followed by classroom analysis of errors made - - and the second test to determine mastery. The test items are constructed to look exactly like those items students will encounter on their High-Stakes Tests.
