Activity Description
Title: Using the Place Value System to Solve Real-World Problems
Synopsis: Students
(a) work with the Base Ten Place Value System to understand working with tens, hundreds, and thousands to conceptualize numbers and understand relative sizes of place values;
(b) learn how to round in order to make estimations for real-world problems as well as evaluate the reasonableness of computations made;
(c) use various methods for multi-digit addition and subtraction.
Finally, attention is given to the Start-Change-Result strategy to begin working with inverse operations. Students also work with money to make estimates and purchases.
Lead-up Skills / Preassessment: Lead-up skills are assessed to help teachers identify any missing readiness skills students may need to attempt the standards in this Activity. Use problems provided to see what students already know about concepts needed to solving problems.
Anchor Problem: three problems are provided for the standards; these should be posted and referred to during the instruction associated with the standard being emphasized.
Direct Instruction: Unpack the standard to identify the underlying skill and key vocabulary ; then use them in the teaching sequence. The underlying skills: determine what the problem is asking, and set up the equation with an unknown to illustrate the problem. The focus is on Rounding and Estimation as well as Multi-digit Addition and Subtraction in real-world problems.
Problems for Practice: Standards-based problems are provided to use for different parts of the instruction, including on the practice work and assessments. These problems require students to document that they have internalized the core ideas of the standard(s) and can show independent mastery.
Final Assessment: students apply concepts in planning a real-world event where they make purchases based on the number of people attending and what is to happen at the event. In addition, students create problems for other students to solve based on what was learned in the teaching.
