This teaching module is developed to assist in the teaching of ELA at the level of 3rd grade for Ohio Standards of RL3.1 and RL3.2 in Non-Fiction.

Title: Explicit Detail and Retell About Non-Fiction

  • Activity Description

This ACTIVITY has a set of teaching-learning strategies proven to enhance student mastery of these two critical Reading-Informational standards - - always included on high-stakes tests!    Students learn to use a simple Template to identify the topic, main idea, supporting details, and challenging

vocabulary.   Students  translate them into questions to askeach other, and create retells to document comprehension.  These analyses are also the basis of the Quick-Writes.    At Grades K-3,

each Activity attaches student-sized texts, templates, and test items that teachers can quickly print and use immediately in class.

    Enabling Skills:

Lead-up skills are listed to help teachers identify any missing readiness skills

students may need to attempt the standards in this Activity.   For this Activity, students should bring the ability to distinguish Fiction from Non-Fiction and (a) name key details and challenging vocabulary and (b) infer the main idea.

    Direct Instruction:

Suggested teaching strategies are given that model for students what they need to do to begin their journey toward mastery.  These strategies include completing the cells of a Non-Fiction Template, including the topic, main idea, supporting details, and challenging vocabulary.  From the template, students develop questions about the text, exchange with each, and show comprehension.

    Quick-Writes:

Standards-based writing prompts are provided that require students to document that they have

internalized the core ideas of the standard(s) and can show independent mastery. In this Activity, the Quick-Writes ask students to (a) identify their “take aways” from texts;  (b) suggest an illustration that would be helpful for the text; (c) write a retell of the text; and (d) write an explanation of the text topic (e.g., gravity or democracy ) for a younger child.

    High-Stakes Look-Alike Assessments:

At Grades 3-8, the Activities include two tests - - one for practice

    - - followed by classroom analysis of errors made

    - - and the second test to determine mastery.   The test items are constructed to look exactly like those items students will encounter on their High-Stakes Tests.
