  This teaching module is developed to assist in the teaching of ELA at the level of 3rd grade for Ohio Standards of RL3.4, L3.4 and L3.5.

• SPECIFICATIONS

  This activity is to expand Grade 3  vocabulary by using context clues, roots and affixes, and figurative langu age.  Also included are multi-meaning words, real-life connections between words and their use, and distinguishing among shades of meaning.  (RL 3.4; L 3.4; L3.5).  The underlying premise of the activity is that students cannot possibly memorize or look up every unfamiliar word they encounter, and there is no Word Wall big enough to post every challenging word.   Several sample sentences and texts are provided to illustrate these vocabulary expansion skills and give students practice using them to accurately predict the meaning of difficult words and phrases. 

  This activity also includes a new technique called “Arrowing Out” - - a strategy where students work in the margin of the text to predict the meaning of unknown words or phrases using the surrounding words, roots an affixes, figurative language, real-life connections, and shades of meaning.   Knowing how to successfully predict the meaning of challenging words and phrases is also the basis for Quick-Writes.  (W 3.1; 3.2; 3.3).   At the end of the activity, students take two tests - - both with items parallel to the OST Released Items.
