  This teaching module is developed to assist in the teaching of ELA at the level of 3rd grade for Ohio Standards of RL3.1 and RL3.2 in Non-Fiction.

• SPECIFICATIONS

  This activity combines students asking and answering questions about - - and retelling - - a NON-FICTION text, based on explicit text detail to support the main idea or topic.  (RI 3.1 and RI 3.2). Much of the INFORMATIONAL (Non-Fiction) text in Grade 3 is from the students’ Science and Social Studies texts.   Students complete a Non-Fiction Template for text details that identify the topic, the main idea, supporting details, and challenging vocabulary.  After repeated practice, students complete their own template in their Daily Read journals.  Using the details from the text template, students  pose and answer questions about the story using a Question Template.

  To show their comprehension, students provide a retell- - capturing the explicit details and overall idea of the text.   The details of the NON-FICTION template are also the bases for Quick-Writes.  (W 3.1; 3.2; 3.3).   At the end of the activity, students take two tests - - both with items parallel to the OST Released Items.
