Having worked as a teacher, administrator, and consultant, I continue to be amazed at the power of education. Each interaction with an administrator, teacher or student sparks a new discovery. It makes me reflective of what I know and understand about education and what I still need to learn.
Some concepts of teaching and learning remain constant over time and some evolve. Teachers engaging students to learn curricular content has occurred in school classrooms from the beginning. I believe it is the core of the teaching and learning process. How teachers structure the learning experience and design the engagement of students is varied and unique to each classroom. The difference lies in the teacher's ability to infuse creativity and innovation into the lesson so that students can create meaning from the engagement. To me, it is the key to true student learning. Students must be actively participating in the lesson as citizens of the classroom rather than tourists. They need to authentically interact with the content to make meaning instead of "seeing" the lesson or passively watching the teacher.
As an EdFOCUS consultant, where I can observe great teaching, I learn and build my capacity as an educator so that I, in turn, can provide insight and motivation to other educators to do things in classroom that they never thought possible. It is a pleasure to keep learning and growing and a challenge and opportunity to share my journey with others.
