Effective teaching is the heart of education. I believe that what students learn is greatly influenced by how they are taught. The everyday decisions made by teachers concerning content, teaching strategies, assessment tasks, classroom management, and interactions with students make the difference in student learning. As a science educator, I encourage active learning in which students ask, find or determine answers to questions derived from curiosity about everyday experiences.
The successful class is one where students accept and share responsibility for their own learning where the experiences mirror the real world. By giving students the opportunity to study things that are meaningful and relevant to their lives, students are motivated to set goals, generate ideas, and work harder to achieve their goals. This is the foundation that strengthens many of the skills that people use every day, like solving problems creatively, thinking critically, working cooperatively in teams, using technology effectively, and valuing life-long learning.
My greatest professional accomplishment happened after I completed my teaching career and began work as a consultant with EdFOCUS. I continue to learn more about teaching and ways to improve student achievement. I have the pleasure to work on school reform with districts in Minnesota, New Jersey, Indiana and Ohio.
I believe that students deserve bright and energetic teachers that can stimulate their minds to a higher level of thinking and make learning enjoyable. As a consultant, I work with teachers to translate state standards into academic learner outcomes and integrate these into classroom instruction. I work with teachers on the need to change how they teach in order to improve student achievement and show how to do it using research-based "best practices" and collaboration.
